MS Office to Integrate with #Facebook

Amplify’d from www.allfacebook.com

Microsoft wants the next version of its Office productivity suite to include Facebook integration.

The integration could simply include messaging or chat, like ZDNet suggests in its headline about Office 15. However, that might be only one of several interfaces. Microsoft Front Page, and possibly Word, could have an option to upload pages to Facebook; Outlook could synchronize with Facebook’s new messages platform; and, of course, Microsoft Messenger could tap into Facebook chat.

Report: 80 percent of toddlers use the Internet

You know how most millennials have used the Internet since they were kids? Well, the next generation is browsing the Web practically at birth.

A report released Monday said that nearly 80 percent of children in the U.S., between the ages of 0 and 5, use the Internet on at least a weekly basis.

Television use is still the most popular form of media among toddlers, according to the report from education non-profits Joan Ganz Cooney Center and Sesame Workshop.

Google deploys People Finder for Japan

Amplify’d from tech.fortune.cnn.com

Google deploys People Finder to help Japanese quake victims

The tool is an easy registry creator to help victims and loved ones communicate during emergencies.

Natural disasters such as the EarthQuake/Tsunami in Japan last night disrupt traditional channels of communication.  When homes are destroyed, cell communications towers toppled, and people taken to emergency rooms or worse, there is very little in the way of a full organized registry of people who may be missing.

For this, Google (GOOG) deploys its People Finder tool.  People Finder is a simple tool to allow people affected by the quake and those who are trying to communicate with them to register their status.  It is built with open standards so other registries can plug into it.

It was recently deployed for the victims of the Christchurch, New Zealand Quake last month which kept a registry of 11,500 people.  Haiti too.

Google Ideas is a think/do tank that studies where technology can help solve the world's problems.  This is a good example of such an endeavor.

Data & Moving beyond web: #SemanticWeb

I was just speaking of how quickly the web has grown and how much information is available to learn and absorb. This compelled me to think about The Semantic Web yet again and how close we are, to actually realizing the world of creating a place that we can all utilize the amounts of information that's available in a uniform way.

Right now there is an abundance of information floating in cyberspace, so to speak. There's data bases, blogs, websites, wikis and the list goes on. There is so much data that the world is becoming inundated with information in all of its many forms.

The Emergence of the Semantic Web is a move in the direction of making this information & data uniform and accessible to all in an easy to utilize way.

I found a great Video that explains quite a bit about the evolution of the web and the future.

The Internet is constantly growing and changing however we tend not to notice, as the changes are mostly gradual.  However as you reflect on the subtle changes that have happened since the popularity of the web that emerged in the 90's, you will realized that there have been significant changes since that time.
As one of the early adopters of the web and all that it had to offer in the 90's I have recently REALLY noticed the changes of late.  Early web, or Web 1.0 consisted of people really becoming comfortable with finding information and data online. Websites lack sophisticated graphics, were very word intense and very informational.  The emergence of Web 2.0 assumed that we have advanced beyond basic comforts of finding the information and pushed us into interaction with that data. Web 2.0 is considered the Social Media Age and we are swiftly coming to the peak of that phase.  Moving forward quickly into Web 3.0, or the Semantic Web, pushes us directly into the age of immersing ourselves in the Data. It is said that the web will become a place that allows data to interact with other data with the purpose of creating an easier and more personalize web experience. As a technologically forward thinking person AKA as a self admited nerd, I look forward to seeing and interacting with the Semantic Web.
I would love your feedback; post your thoughts in the comments section or on my Facebook Page.
A parting thought:

  • Web 1.0 introduced us to the Data
  • Web 2.0 Help us engage with the Data
  • Web 3.0 Data engages with more Data

Wet Cell phone? Rice...Thanks FB Friends

I've mentioned before that I try things out sometimes before recommending, well lucky me, I tried this out. Actually not exactly this but pretty much the same premise.

Last night I had the pleasure of giving my blue tooth an unnecessary plunge. Lucky me :-) So I reached out to my Facebook friends with a pitiful statement and sad face :-( and literally within seconds I had an answer.

RICE

YES, I was told that rice is the answer to a water logged cell phone or blue tooth. I am still in the middle of the rice process. Keep your fingers crossed for me. :-)

I would love to hear stories or solutions that you've used unless of course this has never happened to you. I am all to familiar with cell phones and accessories taking the water plunge. Anywayzzz..Feel free to leave your story , good, bad, ugly or indifferent in the comments section or on my Facebook Wall.

Take a look at the step by step solution on How you can save your Cell Phone below.

Amplify’d from www.wikihow.com

This cell phone was drowned. Can it be saved?

Ever dropped your cell phone in the sink, or even worse... the toilet? Did you ever leave it in your pocket and run it through the washer? Did you ever swim with your cell phone in your pocket? Ever have it fall into the pet's water bowl? Getting your cell phone wet usually means you have to replace it, but sometimes if you're fast enough, you might be able to save the phone! Follow the steps outlined in this article to try and save your wet cell phone.

Remove the phone quickly from its watery source

Take the phone out of the water as soon as possible. The plastic covers on cell phones are fairly tight, but water can enter the phone in a short period of time, perhaps only 20 seconds or less. Grab your phone quickly! Don't switch the phone on, as this can cause it to short circuit – if it has been in water, assume it needs drying immediately whether or not it is working.

  • If you can't get to the phone in time, your best bet is to remove the battery while it is still under water. Water helps to dissipate heat from shorts that can damage the phone, so most damage occurs when the inside of the phone is wet and connected to a power source. This can go both ways, however. Being under water is more likely to short the battery to even more sensitive contacts, so be careful.

  1. 2
Possibly how you're feeling but act first, cry later!

Possibly how you're feeling but act first, cry later!
Don't panic. Your phone will probably not be too damaged if you take it out of the water right away. A longer period of immersion, such as being in the washing machine cycle, will be cause for more alarm but it is still worth trying the following steps before giving up completely.

  1. 3
Remove the battery as soon as possible

Remove the battery as soon as possible
Remove the battery. This is one of the most important steps. Don't take time to think about it; electricity and water do not mix. Cutting power to your phone is a crucial first step in saving it. Many circuits inside the phone will survive immersion in water provided they are not attached to a power source when wet.
    • To find out if the phone is truly water damaged, check the corner near where the battery is – there should be a white square or circle, with or without red lines. If this is pink or red, your phone has water damage.

    • Quickly read the manual to your phone if you're not sure how to remove the battery.

  1. 4
Remove the SIM card to at least save its contents

Remove the SIM card to at least save its contents
Remove the SIM card if you have a GSM carrier. Some or all of your valuable contacts (along with other data) could be stored on your SIM. For many people, this could be more worth saving than the phone itself. SIM cards survive water damage well, but some of the following steps might damage it, so getting it out immediately makes good sense. Just pat it dry and leave it aside until you need to connect your phone to your cellular network. (This step does not apply to CDMA carriers such as Verizon, Alltel, US Cellular, Sprint, etc.)

  1. 5
    Remove any peripherals or covers

    Remove any peripherals or covers
Remove all other peripherals and covers that can be removed. Remove any covers and external connectors to open up as many gaps, slots, and crevices in the phone as possible.

Use a towel to dry the phone

Dry your phone. If there is even one drop of water left inside, it can ruin your phone by corroding it and making the wrong contact. Obviously you need to remove as much of the water as soon as possible, to prevent it from easing its way into the phone:

  • Gently wipe off as much water as possible without dropping the phone. Avoid shaking or moving the phone excessively, so as to avoid moving water through it.

  • Wipe down using a towel or paper towel. Ideally, try not to clog the wet paper in the gaps and grooves of the phone. Keep wiping, to gently remove as much of the remaining water as possible.

  • (Optional): If you pulled the battery out in time, cleaning the inside of your phone with cleaning alcohol (alcohol will displace the water) or contact spray might remedy the problem.

  • Wipe with something soft and dry

Wipe with something soft and dry
Dry any remaining excess moisture by moving your dry or mitten-clad hand across the surface.

Vacuum gently and avoid touching phone

Use a vacuum cleaner if possible. If you want to try and suck the liquid out of the inner parts of the phone, try using a vacuum cleaner. Remove all residual moisture by drawing it away with a vacuum cleaner held over the affected areas for up to 20 minutes, in each accessible area (take it in turns with a friend). This is the fastest method and can completely dry out your phone and get it working in thirty minutes. However, unless the exposure to water was extremely short, it's not recommended to attempt to turn your phone on this soon. Be careful not to hold the vacuum too close to the phone, as a vacuum can create static electricity, which is even worse for the phone.

  • Contrary to common advice, it is not recommended that you use a hair dryer (not even on the "cold" mode) to dry out the phone. Using a hair dryer may force moisture further into the small components, deep inside the phone, as the air blows inward. And if it is too warm, it will likely melt them. If moisture is driven deeper inside, corrosion and oxidation may result when minerals from liquids are deposited on the circuitry. Using a hairdryer might be a temporary fix, but this will eventually cause component failure inside the phone.

Place the phone into something absorbent

Use a substance with a high affinity for water to help draw out moisture. Leave the phone in a bowl or bag of uncooked rice overnight. The rice would absorb any remaining moisture.

  • If available, it is preferable to use desiccant instead. Desiccant will absorb moisture better than rice. If you use this method, slip the cell phone inside a plastic bag that can be sealed or a plastic container (airtight). Add the desiccant packet (often found with shoes, noodle packets, etc.) in with the cell phone. Leave as long as possible (overnight) to absorb the moisture.

  • Rotate the phone to a different position every hour until you go to sleep. This will allow any water left inside to run down and hopefully find an opening to escape.

  1. 9
    Leave untouched to dry

    Leave untouched to dry
Let the phone sit on absorbent towels, napkin, or other paper. After removing the phone from the rice or desiccant (or if you were not able to use either method), place the phone on absorbent material. Remember that the goal is to evacuate all of the moisture and humidity, not to trap it or add even more.
    • Check the absorbent material every hour for 4 to 6 hours. If moisture is evident, repeat the vacuuming step and desiccant steps.

  1. 10
    Check the phone

    Check the phone
Test your phone. After you have waited at least 24 hours, or longer if possible, check to see that everything on and in your cell phone is clean and looks dry. Re-attach the battery to the phone. Try turning it on.
    • If your phone still does not work, try plugging it into its charger without the battery. If this works, you need a new battery.

    • If not, try taking your cell phone to an authorized dealer. Sometimes they can fix it. Don't try to hide the fact that it has been wet – there are internal indicators that prove moisture and they're more likely to be able to help you if you explain exactly what has happened.

If you're going to take your phone apart, be sure to know what you're doing!

Take the phone apart if your phone doesn't turn on at all. If you feel comfortable doing this, try taking it apart. First, make sure that you have all of the right parts and know exactly where they go. Be sure to put everything back in its proper place once finished. As you're disassembling it, pat each individual part dry with a small towel and use the vacuum cleaner once more on the crevices (but be careful not to accidentally suck up any loose parts – keep them well to one side, or stretch a length of old pantyhose over the nozzle). If this doesn't work, or you're too unsure about undoing your phone, get help from cell phone professionals.

  • If your phone is powering up but still acting strange after you've dried it, then it's probable that you've missed some liquid, or that the corrosion has already occurred. Dis-assembly and cleaning with a toothbrush and appropriate solvent may fix it. For the fainthearted, a skilled technician or engineer can often fix such an issue easily and quickly.

Bing Steps it up with FB & #SocialSearch

Social Media is playing and increasingly important role in the daily lives of so many people. At 500 + Millions users Facebook alone is a huge player in the game. This effect has trickled down into search and SEO, re-defining what is and is not relevant with search.

As we use Google and different Social Media channels, what is and is not important has shifted. Search has changed due to Social Media and the changes are bringing forth Social Search and the Team up of Facebook and Bing is playing a HUGE role in pushing this forward.

To read more about Social Search check out some of the resources below:

Google losing Ground to Facebook
Social Search is Happening NOW!
Search Engine Optimization vs Social Media Optimization

As usual, I welcome comments, good, bad ugly or indifferent on my Facebook Wallor in the comments section.

Microsoft has announced it will expand its effort to bring Facebook into Bing’s search results, displaying new annotations alongside any search result links your Facebook friends have liked. Bing first began integrating Facebook “likes” into its search results back in October 2010, but results from your friends were relegated to the bottom of the page. The new version promotes your friends up into the main search results listing.

Microsoft’s Bing offering is roughly the same thing with one huge difference — Bing includes results from Facebook, Google does not.

That’s a huge blind spot for Google given that Bing now has some 500 million Facebook users to pull social data from. At the same time, Google is pulling data from your Twitter friends, which is something Bing does not, thus far, offer. However, given the relatively open nature of Twitter versus the closed nature of Facebook, it will likely be easier for Bing to add Twitter, than for Google to add Facebook.

The best search engine choice depends, for now, on which social networks you use. Facebook fans will find Bing a better match, while those using a wide variety of services will probably see more results from Google Social Search.

#iPad 2 for $124 #Gazelle

Amplify’d from www.fastcompany.com

How to Get an iPad 2 for $124 [Update: Hurry!]

Gazelle iPad offer

Do the math. Gazelle is buying back old iPads, starting at $375. iPad 2s are $499. Also, Apple's quietly selling iPad 1s for $399 ($100 off). Here's where to find these deals, and the answer to the question, "Who the hell's Gazelle?"

The introduction of the iPad 2 leaves a slew of iPad owners with outdated devices in its wake. But there's no need to wallow in being left behind. Recommerce site Gazelle is attempting to drum up business by offering up to $595 for old iPads--so you can, in other words, practically trade in your old iPad for a new one.

Meanwhile, Apple is also offering $100 off the last generation of iPads. But rest assured that if you buy a new one, you'll probably be able to cash in on it when the iPad 3 comes out, thanks to Gazelle.

Gazelle's payouts start at $375 for the old iPad 16GB with Wi-Fi (retail: $499) and range up to $595 for the 64GB Wi-Fi+3G version (retail: $829). Prices will only stay at their current rate until Saturday tonight, when Gazelle lowers the cash payouts for each model. In the meantime, customers can simply sign up at Gazelle, ship their iPads to the company within 30 days (the deal expires after that), and get big bucks in return.

UPDATE: Hurry! Gazelle just wrote this in a follow-up message to Fast Company: "In an unusual turn of events, Apple has dumped their iPad inventory into the used market, significantly swelling the supply and ultimately driving down prices. Gazelle will not be able to maintain the prices through Saturday, and they may even drop as early as tonight. They’re trying to hold out on them for as long as possible before it becomes a net negative offer."
